Science Test Scores

Greenbush-Middle River students earned substantially higher proficiency rates than state averages on the spring 2012 Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment for science. This test is administered to Minnesota’s 5th graders, 8th graders, and one high school grade after students have completed a Life Science course. Results were recently release by the Minnesota Department of Education, and parents should expect their children’s individual reports at the end of first quarter.

With so much emphasis on math and reading test scores, GMR staff is working hard to support student achievement in all curricular areas. Along with teachers’ curriculum planning, family and community support promotes science education. For example, many local people working in agriculture successfully nominated the district for a large Monsanto grant to study ag-related science. Also, parent volunteer Sandy Melby leads an enthusiastic group of elementary students in regular meetings of the Science Club, including special activities with local businesses and the Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge.

When combining all grades for an overall district proficiency rate, GMR student performance compares favorably with neighboring districts:

Gator Girls Win Opener

The BGMR Girls Softball Team won their season opener with an impressive 11-2 victory over friendly rival Norman County East-Ulen Hitterdal.  The Gators used an explosive first inning scoring 5 runs and did not look back in route to the victory.  Gator starting pitcher Benita Novacek combined with reliever Katie Langaas to limit the Titans to 7 hits and 2 runs with Novacek picking up the victory.
The Gator’s lead-off hitter Aunica Novacek started the season off on the right foot for the Gators as she singled up the middle.  Janna Hall than tripled to scored Novacek.  After Lynsi Emery popped out Kaitlynn Wilson doubled to scored Hall.  Tylynn McKeever reached on an error that also scored Wilson.  McKeever and Novacek later scored on a single by Lyndsey Anderson.
The Gators pushed 2 more runs across in the third.  Wilson singled and scored on a single by McKeever.  After a ground out that moved McKeever to third Novacek helped her own cause laying down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt.
The Titans got on the board in the third with 3 consecutive singles all occurring with two outs.  BGMR however put the game out of reach with two runs each in the sixth and seventh inning.
BGMR will now have some time off before their next game.  The Gators are taking part in their conference scrimmage today in Thief River Falls.  The scrimmage begins at 4:00 and the Gators will face 3 different teams.  The Gators are also hoping to move up one of their games as the weather looks favorable this week.  Stay tuned to any Gator Softball updates.
